Walden Original Fire Pit Grate

A fire grate is a raised metal platform designed to elevate firewood off the bottom of a fire pit, allowing for optimal air circulation. This improved airflow creates a hotter, more efficient fire, and helps reduce smoke. Additionally, a fire pit grate simplifies the clean-up process by allowing ashes to fall below the grate, which makes cleaning out your fire pit a breeze.

A fire pit grate enhances your outdoor fire pit experience by improving airflow for a hotter, cleaner burn with less smoke. It also creates space for easy ash collection, simplifying the cleaning process. Additionally, the grate provides a stable platform for your logs, making it easier to tend the fire and enjoy a more even burn throughout the night.

To find the right size fire grate for your outdoor fire pit, measure the inside diameter of the pit and subtract a few inches (typically 2-6 inches) from that measurement. This ensures proper clearance from the sides of the fire pit, allowing for good airflow and heat expansion of the metal grate within your fire ring. For example, if your fire pit is 32” in diameter, a fire pit grate between 26” and 30” would be suitable.

Placing your fire pit grate directly on grass is not advisable due to the potential dangers it poses. Although the fire itself is elevated, the intense heat emitted from the grate can easily scorch or even ignite the grass, especially if it's dry. To ensure safety, it is highly recommended to utilize a fire pit on a non-flammable surface such as stone pavers, a concrete slab, or within a dedicated fire pit ring.

The spoke-style Wagon Wheel Fire Grate is slightly taller than our original grate and comes in larger sizes (up to 35”), perfect for colossal fire pits and bonfires. Its angled spoke tips are perfect for containing larger logs and giving you more creativity with your wood stacking style.

While not all fire pit grates include an ember catcher, this simple addition can greatly enhance your fire pit experience. An ember catcher consists of a tight mesh placed over your fire grate, effectively preventing smaller embers from falling to the ground. This not only promotes a more consistent fire, but also leads to a hotter burn and better fireside ambiance.
