Installation

1.

Place Brim Ring

Place the wide Brim Ring over the pavers or stone fire pit. Center the Brim Ring before adding other parts.

Lower Fire Ring into Pit

Insert main Fire Ring into the Brim Ring with the outward-facing lip on top. We recommend stepping within the fire ring and lowering into the pit.

3.

Funnel and Ash Basin

Place the funnel in the bottom of the Fire Ring, and the Ash Basin within the center of the funnel.

4.

Foldable Grate

With the Ember Catcher on top, place the Foldable Steel Grate in the bottom of the Fire Ring, over the funnel.

5.

Snuffer Lid

After assembling and attaching the Cool-Touch Handle, place the Snuffer Lid over the top of the insert.

Do I need to put sand under my fire pit?

No, there is no need to put sand under your Walden Legacy Series™ fire pit insert because it's completely self-contained when placed inside a block fire pit surround. Some folks still choose to put sand or gravel down before they put the fire pit wall blocks just to level out the ground. If you tamp down the gravel before placing the blocks, it can give you a really solid foundation and help prevent any shifting, sinking, or frost-heave movement.

What do I need to build a fire pit?

Once you've found the perfect spot for your outdoor fire pit (make sure it's on level ground and away from any buildings), all you need are some tapered blocks and the Complete Legacy Fire Pit Insert Set. To DIY your fire pit, arrange the blocks in a circle with an inside diameter of 31-38 inches and total height of 15-20 inches (this takes about 4 courses of blocks). No need for mortar or adhesive – the Walden Brim Ring will keep the blocks of your fire pit in place. Pop the Brim Ring on top of the fire pit surround, add the Legacy Fire Ring and the rest of the set, and you're good to go in just 5 minutes, no tools required!

How many blocks do I need to DIY a fire pit?

The number of blocks you'll need depends on the block type you choose and the height you prefer. Blocks are usually about 4"x11"6" with a tapered design, so they naturally form a circle when placed side-by-side. Make a circle of blocks with an inner diameter somewhere between 31 and 38 inches - about 12 blocks per layer. If the blocks are 4" tall, then you'll want four or five layers for a total fire pit wall height of 15 to 20 inches. Good news! You don't need mortar or adhesives because the Legacy will sit atop the fire pit blocks and hold them in place.

What shape and specification of blocks do I need?

Your local gardening store will sell standard retaining wall blocks of about 4"x11"6". They usually come in tapered shape, perfect for stacking blocks in circular layers that will become your fire pit wall. A variety of shapes, textures and colors are widely available across the US, so finding just the right look and shape should be easy. You're looking to stack the blocks in a circle with a total fire pit wall height of 15 to 20 inches and an inside diameter between 31 and 38 inches. For the standard blocks of about 4"x11"6", this will take four layers of 12 blocks for a total of 48 blocks.

Where do I get these fire pit wall blocks?

Fire pit wall blocks (often sold as "retaining wall blocks") are available in a variety of textures and colors nationwide at home improvement stores, landscape supply stores, and many garden centers. Just let 'em know that you're looking to build a round fire pit and would like to see their options. Can I grill on my fire pit?

Yes, absolutely you can grill on your Legacy fire pit. Just place a large BBQ grilling grate right on top of your Legacy brim ring for terrific “live fire cooking”, or use roasting sticks for grilling hot dogs and delicious s'mores. Nothing compares to the taste of food cooked over real wood, whether you choose oak, mesquite, maple, or any other favorite as your firewood base. Your friends and family will love getting in on the fun too!

What’s the difference between a smokeless fire pit and a classic fire pit?

Smokeless fire pits are a new trend with mixed reviews. Their can-style design makes them capable of burning wood with minimal smoke - but only after they heat up and the secondary combustion flow kicks in. They incinerate wood quickly, but radiate minimum heat without costly accessories. You typically see just the top of the flame, with the glowing embers mostly hidden from sight. Classic fire pits, such as our Legacy Fire Pit, on the other hand, allow full vision of the fire. Like other classic wood-burning fire pits, Legacy radiates ample heat and for a cozy fireside ambiance. You can achieve smokeless burning with your classic fire pit with these three important factors: dry wood, good air flow, and good heat generation for combustion. Our Legacy fire pit was crafted with the last two factors in mind, so you just need to add dry firewood to minimize smoke production.

Should I buy a wood burning fire pit or a gas fire pit?

Whether you choose a wood-burning fire pit or a gas fire pit is really a matter of personal preference and purpose; both styles deliver very different experiences and appeal to different interests. Gas fire pits are convenient, clean, and deliver showpiece gas flame instantly, but without the use of real wood. The experience of a real wood burning fire pit is, well, more real.
